Why adopt from Ethiopia? Here are some statistics from The World Health Organization about Ethiopia: The life expectancy of a baby born in Ethiopia is 42.7 years. The current average wage is $160.00 per year. The average number of births per woman is 6. Over 40 % of women give birth before the age of 19. One in ten infants die before the age of 1. One in six children die before the age of 5 from preventable disease. The main cause of infant/child death is diarrhea and pneumonia. There are currently about 4 million orphans (UNICEF). Over 50% of children have stunted growth because of lack of nutrition. Only 26% of adult women are literate.
Although we don’t think adoption is the solution for the problems of Ethiopia, until the problems are solved in other ways, adoption can help to ease the problem for the those orphans who are adopted.
